Professor Yiqun Liu of Tsinghua University’s Department of Computer Science and Technology has been inducted into the ACM Special Interest Group on Information Retrieval (ACM SIGIR) Academy. The announcement, made by ACM SIGIR on March 28, marks Professor Liu as the first electee from a Chinese research institution, and recognizes his significant and cumulative contributions to the Information Retrieval (IR) research community.
ACM SIGIR is a global academic organization in the field of information retrieval. It sponsors esteemed academic conferences such as SIGIR, CIKM, and WSDM, which are highly regarded in both academia and industry. The ACM SIGIR Academy was established to honor and recognize individuals who have made significant, cumulative contributions to the development of the field of information retrieval (IR). The electees to the SIGIR Academy are the principal leaders in IR, whose efforts have shaped the discipline and/or industry through significant research, innovation, and/or service.
This year, the ACM SIGIR Academy elected five new members, including representatives from the National Institute of Standards and Technology, Carnegie Mellon University, the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in Australia, and Spotify. With the addition of these new members, the Academy now consists of 42 members from various countries.
Dr. Yiqun Liu is a professor in the Department of Computer Science and Technology at Tsinghua University and the dean of Tsinghua’s Research & Development Affairs Office. He has received numerous awards, including the 17th China Youth Science and Technology Award and the first prize of Beijing Science and Technology Award in 2015 and 2022. He also received the first prize of “Qian Weichang” Chinese Information Processing Science and Technology Award. In addition to his roles at Tsinghua University, Professor Liu holds several academic part-time positions. He is the Deputy Secretary-General of the Chinese Association for Artificial Intelligence, Director of the Information Retrieval Committee of the Chinese Information Processing Society of China (CIPS), Chair of the Steering Committee for SIGIR-AP, and Founding Chair of the ACM SIGIR Beijing Chapter. In 2021, he was recognized as ACM Distinguished Member for his "outstanding scientific contributions to computing".
