International Conference inaugurated celebrating 15th Anniversary of Yau Mathematical Sciences Center

The opening ceremony of an international conference on the theme 2024 Current Developments in Mathematics and Physics Celebrating the 15th Anniversary of Yau Mathematical Sciences Center (YMSC) was held on April 3.

Yu Yingjie delivers a speech

Yu Yingjie, member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Beijing Municipal Committee and secretary of the Education Working Committee, extended congratulations on the achievements of the YMSC since its establishment and expresses respect for Shing-Tung Yau's contributions to the development of the center. He remarked that Beijing carries a significant mission in strengthening basic research and promoting international scientific exchange and cooperation. Looking ahead, Beijing will focus on leveraging the leading role of scientific and technological innovation, deeply implementing initiatives to lead in basic research, and striving to build Beijing into a world-leading scientific center and innovation hub. Efforts will be made to create an international talent environment, actively implementing the plan to build Beijing into a high-level talent hub, and continuously optimizing the environment for talent development. He encouraged attendees to take this conference as an opportunity to fully exchange and converge ideas, gather consensus, and collectively make active contributions to promoting the development of international basic science and enhancing human well-being.

Li Luming delivers a speech

Tsinghua University President Li Luming extended congratulations on behalf of the University for the achievements made by the YMSC over the past 15 years in the areas of high-level talent introduction, advanced academic research, mathematics discipline construction, and the cultivation of outstanding mathematical talents. He thanked various sectors of society for their concern and support for Tsinghua's development. He stated that a high-level research-oriented university is the natural convergence point of three factors: science and technology as the primary productivity, talent as the primary resource, and innovation as the primary driving force. In international cooperation on basic research, universities must play a more proactive and leading role. The purpose of this conference is to promote interdisciplinary integration among mathematics, physics, and artificial intelligence, further establishing an international platform for exchange and open cooperation. Li conveyed the hope that participating experts and scholars will freely discuss the latest research topics in the field of basic science, exchange ideas, and achieve fruitful results. He anticipates the YMSC constantly enhance the level of cultivating leading talents in mathematics, accelerate the formation of original and revolutionary scientific and technological innovation achievements, and contribute more wisdom and strength to the development of mathematics in China and the progress of global science and technology.

Shing-Tung Yau addresses the opening ceremony

Academician Shing-Tung Yau, a Fields Medal Winner and YMSC director, reflected on the fifteen-year history of the Yau Mathematical Sciences Center. With the continuous efforts of mathematicians, YMSC now boasts a high-level international faculty team. Through the joint-built Beijing Institute of Mathematical Sciences and Application, the center has further expanded its research field from pure mathematics to the applied mathematics. Yao is mounting efforts of all researchers to cultivate top mathematical talents for the country, build a world-class mathematical research center and construct a top-notch talent training base - Qiuzhen College. He hopes to achieve success in the next five years. He hopes that colleagues at the YMSC and Qiuzhen College students leverage their strengths to solve important and critical problems in basic science and applied fields, and help China stand among world’s mathematical powerhouses. Professor Shing-Tung Yau believes that mathematics and physics have become increasingly inseparable in the past fifty years. Mathematics plays a crucial role in the development of modern technology and will change the direction of many disciplines. It is hoped that attendants can learn about the latest research trends and explore the direction of mathematical research from a wider range of disciplines.

Academician Xi Nanhua, president of Chinese Mathematical Society and vice-president of ShanghaiTech University; Li Jun, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and professor at Fudan University; Academician Zhang Chuhan, professor of Tsinghua University; Kang Qian, secretary of the CPC Chongqing University of Technology Committee; Wu Gang, executive vice president of Southeast University; and Zheng Li, vice president of Tsinghua University attended the opening ceremony.
